Crossing takes two more lives in 1922 train-truck accident | News, Sports, Jobs


• Two more names were added to the growing list of grade crossing victims here.
Joseph T. Morris and Glen Steinmetz died as the result of an accident at the Quinby Avenue crossing of the Erie.
Passenger Train No. 6, speeding from Cleveland and due here at 3:43 p.m., crashed into a Ford truck owned by Morris, instantly killing the driver and Steinmetz, who was his brother-in-law.
The story of the accident, told by a man believed to be the only eyewitness to the fatal crash, was related by A. P. Carter, watchman on duty at the Tod Avenue crossing.
“Suddenly a truck appeared, coming from West Market on Quinby. It seemed to dart right onto the track, directly in the path of the engine,” Carter said. “The pilot of the locomotive struck the truck when the front auto wheels were about in the middle of the track. Parts of the truck were hurled into the air.” ....

South Pine gambling operation landed in court | News, Sports, Jobs


99 years ago in 1922:
• Authorities began the city’s case against Alex Bollis, charged with keeping a gambling place at South Pine Street, which police in two raids cleared of elaborate gambling paraphernalia.
City solicitor Lea examined and cross examined witnesses before Judge Jones in police court.
Bollis and his brother, Steve, told of operating a mere rooming house and “parlors” where soft drinks could be served if wanted.
Police in a double raid found the place carefully guarded, they say, and entrance was gained only after breaking through a heavy door. Bollis also was charged with violation of the screen law because of the door and closed entrance. ....

This Week in History: Injured rail passenger sued Erie railroad in 1922 | News, Sports, Jobs


99 years ago in 1922:
• Alleging that because of the crowded condition of a handcar on which he was riding, he was thrown off and suffered permanent injuries, George Limberopulos sued the Erie Railroad for $25,000 damages for an accident that was said to have occurred near Barberton in May of 1920. Limberopulos was a trackman employed by the company.
On the day mentioned, he and 14 others were placed on a handcar and were being taken to a point near Barberton. Owing to the crowd on the handcar and the speed, he said he was thrown off and injured.
Audrey Landles, a minor, by her next friend, John Landles, sued the Freedom Oil Works company for $3,000 damages for injuries alleged to have been received when an automobile in which she was riding was struck by a truck belonging to the defendant company. The accident occurred on Hubbard Coitsville Road on Nov. 30, 1921. ....
