As members of congress, we take our responsibility to protect access to the ballot very seriously. This subcommittee and our committee as a whole is charged with overseeing the administration of federal elections. This country has a long history of failing to ensure equal and unencumbered access to the ballot for all her citizens. While states and localities have a significant role in carrying out elections, congress cannot abdicate its critical responsibility to ensure every eligible american can access the ballot box, cast a ballot free from discrimination and suppression, and has a steadfast faith in our democratic process that their ballot will be counted as cast. Its definitely a unique and remarkable moment with respect to the fact that we havent seen large. Not large but widespread political protests in egypt in several years this is taking place in a number of cities it is a challenge to monitor the situation accurately because unfortunately there are a lot of fake videos that have also been circulating that is from 2013 protests that have been posted by people purporting to be protests today but as we try to work to verify the images it is clear that there are a number of protests taking place in a number of different provinces throughout egypt the size of the protests are still fairly small and a number of them are being dispersed but it still shows remarkable courage and while the numbers may not be very dramatic.
