In many ways, the kitchen is the heartbeat of the Allegheny County Jail. 
Forty workers at a time prepare food for more than 1,600 hungry men and women. Standing shoulder to shoulder, they transfer meatballs, applesauce and peas to trays, then load those trays to a big cart and send them up in the elevator. Pantry workers walk the halls, pods, and corridors to deliver that food to their neighbors’ cell door. Hands pass trays and cartons of milk. Bodies bump into each other behind the kitchen line. Workers feed empty trays to a giant dishwasher nicknamed “The Beast” and the process starts over again. ....

Tablets Offer Those Incarcerated At County Jail Connection To Outside, But Not Without Issues

Free electronic tablets have been distributed to those incarcerated at the Allegheny County Jail as a way to connect them to the outside world through video calls, movies, eBooks and messaging. But there have been complaints about reliable connection and costs associated with accessing many of the tablet’s features.
The Allegheny County Jail purchased 2,200 GTL tablets in October. Incarcerated people can use them daily between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. There are currently enough tablets for all incarcerated people at the jail; the population at ACJ as of Dec. 14 was 1,706. Officials say the devices cost $350 per unit. ....
