Woodpecker should be on city short list
What a great idea to choose an official bird for London, Londoners asked to pick city’s official bird (May 13) But given that this is the Forest City, I’m surprised to see no woodpeckers on the short list.

Red-bellies, flickers, the hairy and downy all live here. They make their homes in tree trunks and find their insect meals on trees. They are happy visitors at feeders, especially in the winter.

Golf not so bad
I take issue with columnist Jane Sims’ comparing student parties, the church in Aylmer and a golf course in her column Student parties shut down, but church, golf course defy rules (April 27).

Golf is played outside, socially distanced with players walking. Many older players already are vaccinated. Students parties and the church involve people congregating inside, close together and spreading the virus.
It was short-sighted for the government to shut down playgrounds, soccer fields, tennis courts and golf courses. The walking trails are packed because people are looking for safe exercise outdoors. The majority of Londoners are following the restrictions but in the case of outdoor activities, it doesn’t make sense to restrict them. People will rebel and you are already seeing it with the Bridges golf course opening i
