Covid lockdown turns Odisha bus owner to vegetable seller


Panchanan Sahu, a 42-year-old bus owner from Kandhamal with a fleet of five minibuses, now sells vegetables with the pandemic having frozen the transport business.
Sahu said one of his problems was that while his income from his buses had plummeted to zero, he still had to pay the insurance premium and permit fee both of them hiked during the pandemic and road tax.

“Most of my 20 employees have left, their dues unpaid. Only five have stayed on, selling vegetables with me and looking after the buses, which are in poor condition,” Sahu told The Telegraph.
“Whatever the earning from selling vegetables, I share with them.” ....

BHUBANESWAR: Bus owners are having a tough time. Even before they could recover from the losses they had to incur in the first wave owing to lockdown and shutdown, they are now faced with yet another downturn due to the second wave. With the government having imposed lockdown in the entire state from May 5 to 19, bus owners are staring at heavy losses. Many are struggling to pay wages and EMIs.
Because of government restrictions and fear of catching the virus, not enough passengers were boarding buses between April third week and December last year. Services resumed properly only in January when the Covid situation improved a bit. ....
