The House of Commons has adopted a motion to declare China’s actions against Uighurs and other Turkic Muslims a genocide, with the Liberal cabinet abstaining.
In a 266-0 vote held Monday afternoon, the Conservative motion was supported by New Democrat, Bloc Québécois, and Green MPs. All Liberal backbenchers present supported the motion, except Lloyd Longfield, who abstained.
Foreign Affairs Minister Marc Garneau abstained “on behalf of the government of Canada.” No other ministers, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, were present for the vote.
