Monday morning of this week started out just like any other Monday morning for Emily Winston, owner of Boichik Bagels in Berkeley. It’s one of her two days off, so she was just relaxing when the phone call came.
A friend and someone who has been following the progress of Boichik closely since it began OK, it was this reporter called with some incredible news: In a headline that could only be considered incendiary by many, the New York Times had just declared, “The Best Bagels are in California (Sorry, New York).”
And not only that, but the author of the March 8 article, New York Times restaurant critic Tejal Rao, singled out Boichik as her new favorite.
Alameda County food workers now eligible for COVID-19 vaccines
Berkeley grocery store and convenience store workers are now eligible for COVID-19 vaccines. On Monday, the city of Berkeley announced it was expanding eligibility for these workers, along with in-person educators and childcare workers, to make appointments at the Curative vaccination site in Albany. By Tuesday, all available appointment slots had been filled, but the city said more appointments could become available due to cancellations or added supplies.
Meanwhile, food and agriculture workers (including restaurant workers) in Alameda County are eligible to schedule vaccine appointments at the newly opened Oakland Coliseum vaccination site through the California Department of Public Health’s COVID-19 vaccination website.

Noah Nathan sent this one around to the Congregation Beth Israel community via email.
“I arrive early to say all the Korbanos.”
And J. food columnist Alix Wall spotted this one in the Illuminoshi Facebook group. Here Bernie is seen in front of The Snug, a San Francisco restaurant co-owned by Shlock’s Bagels & Lox founder Zack Schwab.

Usually, around this time of year, we’re feeling pretty good. We’re buzzing with a sense of joy and relaxation, spending time with family and friends, gathering and eating meals together and looking back on the fun times we had over the last 12 months. After almost a full year of living with COVID-19, those halcyon holiday times seem so distant from our current reality. But while we didn’t get many opportunities to eat at restaurants or meet up for meals with friends, we still did have some good times and ate plenty of good food in 2020.
