9 & 10 News The scholarship will be available for kids to apply next scholarship season in 2022. - Alison Metiva April 5, 2021 A new scholarship opportunity is coming to students in the Grand Traverse Region, thanks to two teachers and a community that sees the need. The Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation is announcing the LGBTQ Pride Scholarship fund. Dan Rice and Marek Ulicny, both teachers at Traverse City West, are behind the idea. Fundraising is underway for the scholarship, and so far the Community Foundation says they have raised $8,000 of the $10,000 goal for LGBTQ kids and their allies. Alison Metiva with the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation is the Vice President of Donor Engagement and Operations. She says, the teachers “recognize that youth face barriers as it relates to identity, coming out, bullying. And often (they) have financial challenges because of family support or other challenges they’re facing.” ....
