National Trails Day guided hikes and volunteer work projects will take place Saturday at Kanawha State Forest, Coonskin Park and the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. Organized by the American Hiking Society and held annually on the first Saturday in June. In 2024, it was to be held on June 1, 2024. National Trails Day is meant to boost awareness and promote maintenance of public hiking trails across the United States.
Depending on who you talk to, a proposed West Virginia International Yeager Airport runway extension project will either make Coonskin Park considerably flatter and uglier or an easier-to-use place.
A group of about 50 people met at the trailhead of the Alice Knight Trail in Coonskin Park Sunday at the invitation of West Virginia Rivers and West Virginians for Public Lands. The group took a one mile hike to assess the potential impact on the park from a proposed expansion of Yeager Airports main runway.
