This community. And you started writing that when you were in college. Yeah. Hinojosa so did you ever imagine, yeah, its going to end up on broadway, or was that just like an illusion . Oh, i imagined it laughing i mean, you wouldnt write it if you didnt feel like it was. It was worth something, but i imagined it in the way that you imagine being a jedi when you are three years old, you know . Its in the realm of possibility, and sure, maybe one day. But you know, i just. I knew that i wanted to write, i knew that i wasnt good at anything else, and i just. I knew there werent enough musicals to keep me employed as a latino actor if i wanted to go into theater. And i. And i just sort of started writing everything id always wanted to see in a musical, musically speaking. Just hip hop music and latin music and all the stuff id sort of grown up with. Hinojosa and you were able to translate that. What i love is that you had these images of broadway, and youre able to take hip hop and salsa, ....
I think i just got an f from you, actually. applause diane guerrero, welcome. Thank you for having me. So nice to meet you. The book is amazing and maybe the most amazing thing about it is the bravery that had to have gone into the decision to write it. You could have gone along in your very successful career as an actress and never written this book, never told this story, probably not subjected yourself to what, im sure, youve been subjected to in writing it. Yes, its so, why do it . Well, first, you give me way too much credit. As somebody who is brave . Well, okay. I think brave and successful you have to live on twitter after this book comes out, so thats up to you. Thats right, thats right. I mean, look. I saw a need for this story to come out and i so desperately wanted to be part of that movement and join the fight. I was inspired by dreamers going out there and putting themselves at risk, demanding for immigrant rights. I knew i had such a personal story but i was a citizen ch ....
Not much anymore. That was an earlier chapter in my life. And odd that you would mention my ethnicity there. And i say that because i once thought about that. And i realized that i may be the most visible scientist of any discipline, of any ethnicity, of any skin color, in america today. And the reason why i went through that mental exercise was because there i am trying to bring the frontier of science to the public, and i said, i dont want to do that alone. I want some others there with me. And i looked around to see whos there with me. You know, do we have a geologist there with me, and a biologist . And there are a few that are known you know, e. L. Wilson and brian greene and michio kaku. But given the size of that science frontier, we need many more. And so im disappointed that im sitting there alone with that kind of distinction. Hinojosa so when i was growing up, the most famous scientist was carl sagan. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Hinojosa and you actually got a chance to meet him, hang o ....
Are you gonna run for president . I think i just got an f from you actually. audience applauding r. L. Stine, welcome. Thank you. Very nice to meet you. So nice to be here. I seem to remember the actual Christmas Carol being scary. Why is it necessary to write a scary version of this . I know, and nothing like stealing from the best, right . Right, well, but you understand its like when i hear that were gonna do a scary version of a Christmas Carol, thats like a musical version of rent. I thought it was a musical. No, youre totally right. Why this now . I had never written a christmas book before. [evan] oh is that right . Yeah. [evan] in all the books youre written, hundreds of books. I thought no, this is inappropriate for christmas i thought, and then i realized the most popular christmas story ever was a ghost story. Thats true. Yeah. Multiple ghosts. Then i had this id ....
Chips. Hinojosa so a lot of people, when they think of the south bronx, 1960s, 70s, when you were growing up. Right, right, right. Hinojosa . Their image is of a place that was entirely desolate, that was, you know, in destruction. Right, right. Hinojosa but for you, it was a totally different reality. Well, there was that element to it. But i always say that i was very fortunate to have grown up in that time period, because the culture, as far as latino and African American culture, particularly afro puerto rican, afro cuban culture, and obviously African American culture, were in full force in the streets, particularly in the summertime, because we had rumbas in the park all the time. Thats when youd hear people playing drums, conga drums, and playing this beautiful rhythm. Hinojosa now, im going to stop you right there, because i bet some people are saying, they had wh ....
