Austin 360 March has once again served as an annual opportunity to celebrate the contributions of women to American culture and history. In recognition of the tireless effort of women in the Central Texas hospitality industry, below is a list of local restaurants owned and/or operated primarily by women. Of course, ownership, partnerships and management teams are complicated, and the list doesn’t cover a host of husband-and-wife teams (Asia Market Eatery, Asti, Baguette et Chocolate, Dee Dee, Franklin Barbecue, Gourmands, Justine’s, Kome, Lenoir, Pieous, Poke-Poke, P. Terry s and Vince Young Steakhouse), family-owned restaurants (El Meson, Tamale House East) and the many trailers (Kreyol Korner, Tacos Guerrero, La Flor, Talad Thai and Lao Street Food) run by women. One of Austin s best barbecue operations finally has a place it can call its permanent home. The owners of La Barbecue, which started life as a trailer on South First Street before heading to East Austin and eventually setting into the Quickie Pickie building on East Cesar Chavez Street, announced Sunday that they plan to open just down the street at 2401 E. Cesar Chavez St. in early May. Social media posts indicate the new location will be able to serve beer and wine, along with some of the best smoked meats (and intense sandwiches) in Central Texas. The new East Austin home isn t the first time the owners have almost settled down. They looked at a property on South Congress Avenue in 2015 but the deal didn t come together. ....

Panther City BBQ in Fort Worth also announced it will run a school for aspiring pitmasters called BBQU. Co-owners Chris Magallanes and Ernest Morales hope to hold the first class this month, in a building down the street from the restaurant. Dayne’s Craft Barbecue in Fort Worth, which has been a Saturday-only mainstay for years, will move to three days a week at the end of this month. Hutchins BBQ in McKinney is in rebuild mode after a fire, and the owners plan to reopen in April. The Dallas Observer tried the new Burnt BBQ & Tacos, but unfortunately didn’t order the thoroughly unique (according to the owner) combination of tacos with barbecue. ....
