They were behind on the technology, behind on cultural significance of these platform and having a whistleblower here no at company official, not someone with any agenda other than exposing what they know, took some of the steam out of what, you know, we sometimes are involved in, partisan hearings where people are trying to score political points. this was a fact finding hearing. i think the opening you played from haugen, opening up facebook s data will be key. lawmakers have tried to come at facebook in a couple ways, whether it be on an antitrust basis or on a data protection basis or content management which republicans have talked about as a form censorship, none of those things have exactly worked and the solution here may be trying to require facebook to share a little bit more of how the special sauce, the algorithm works. they don t have competitors. they are a legal monopoly in so many ways. a lot of questioning focused around trying to understand how facebook shows us what ....

Most engaging and most viral. but that they turn their algorithms to their benefit to respond to that very content that is so divisive and dangerous. i think that it s likely true that there will be some kind of response because the alarm was so bipartisan today and i think that s a good thing. just very hard to see because there are free speech arguments. because there s a difference of opinions between democrats and republicans on whether you have to go after the noncompetitive monopolies and break them up or whether or not is really is an issue of facebook revealing their data and sharing their processes and letting people and experts inside their algorithm so they can be regulate d. whether or not that s the issue. while it was heartening to see ....

The algorithm that would have marginal impacts on but would d ton to restrain misinformation. when they say in that statement, things that are hateful. that he is not good for advertisers. advertisers don t want that. that s probably very true. the the problem is it s not always just hateful. it s it s you know, the the counter incentive they have is to keep eyeballs on facebook. to keep eyeballs on instagram. for as long as possible. i mean, that s that is the financial in incentive to keep people engaged with the site. and and and anger sells. people are actually most easily engaged through anger, and other negative emotions like that. it s actually easier to generate anger. well, of course. i mean, that s why i mean, look on cable news. you see the hosts who are, you know, yelling and full of anger. that that s you know, that has the most buzz. ....
