Steve: because it does have so much power that s why we play that soundbite where she was talking about facebook s impact on our national security. you think oh, it s a good way to trade pictures and stuff like that, recipes. no, it s actually a big problem. and she should know. she worked on facebook counter espionage intelligence team. and she saw with her own two eyes and by the way she did send thousands of document to all the lawmakers who were sitting there so they would know how to question her. she saw that china was using facebook to surveil the uyghur dissidents and iran was using plat platform for espionage. no doubt facebook one of those topics, such a hot button issue it has united both democrat and republicans. they have got to figure out a bill how to rein it in somehow. she suggested yesterday that they require facebook to release its internal research which would essentially show that mysterious algorithm that they always use. she had a terrific idea. and it was she su ....

Engagement-based ranking. this obsession with getting comments and likes and reshares. this is where the danger lies for the current version of the algorithm. mark zuckerberg completely skips over that and then says that facebook was making a sacrifice by doing this because it sacrificed time spent. as we report, that doesn t really tell the whole picture because they were panicking inside the company before making that change, that these engagement metrics were going down. part of the reason for doing this algorithm change was to boost metrics for facebook s bottom line because it was going to help facebook s business in the long term by making sure people stayed on the platform. the second broad point i would say is he sets up several straw men including this idea that we were suggesting or that the whistle-blower was suggesting that facebook was creating an algorithm on purpose to make angry content go viral. that s not what anyone is suggesting. we re suggesting that they did this, ....

They ll lose time spent on their platforms, so it really needs to be a comprehensive regulation, which is what i proposed in my piece in the new york times. let s talk about that, what is the most impactful regulation, the most impactful change that you re suggesting? so what my proposal calls for, and by the way, tit s not just me. frances haugen yesterday also called for the same regulation, a narrow exemption in section 230 which is law that basically makes it so these companies can host user generated content without fear of lawsuits, so if there was a very narrow exemption in that basically saying if you re a social media platform and you use an algorithm to amplify this content, you should be held liable for that content. what i would do is make it so the platforms would moves away from the algorithm based feeds and move towards feeds and systems that users have more control over. we want to take the power away ....

Whistleblower from facebook, frances haugen, had her own ideas which he laid out today and she believes on of the biggest issues is the algorithm, the software, that decides what you see every time you open facebook and instagram. the software gets to know you, what you are like and what you are interested in and it recognises that a teenage girl may have liked a post that had to do with an extreme diet and then it feeds her more and more posts about eating disorders that make you feel worse about her body. her proposal was that social platform should be required to offer all the posts in reverse chronological order, like they did in the old days, before they had these sophisticated algorithms. you would see everything that everyone posted and they would not be learning about you all the time, tapping into yourfears and about you all the time, tapping into your fears and vices and playing on those. there are others who think that is the wrong approach and they want to expose the tech c ....
