Algerian police prevent pro-democracy protest, arrest journalists

Algerian police prevented a pro-democracy protest rally from taking place in the capital Algiers Friday and detained several people including journalists, among them an AFP photographer, AFP correspondents said.
Demonstrators were preparing to take part in the weekly Hirak movement protest when they were jostled and taken into custody by police in the city centre, an AFP journalist and other witnesses said.
AFP photographer Ryad Kramdi was detained in the working-class Bab El Oued neighbourhood for an identity check and was taken to a police station.
He was released in the evening after eight hours in detention. ....

Thousands protested in Algiers Friday during a weekly demonstration of the Hirak pro-democracy movement despite a heavy police presence, AFP correspondents said.
Protesters changed route for the first time since marches resumed in February in order to avoid police roadblocks.
Whatever you do, we will not stop, protesters shouted, addressing a massive police presence in the center of the capital.
Some held pictures of prisoners of conscience opposition and Hirak activists demanding their release.
Repression only strengthens the will to fight and cements the solidarity of those subjected to it, other signs read. ....
