supposed to be, happy, pretty, pampered and without worries. nearly the exact opposite of my life up to that point. i was done. i unpacked my entire room in less that an hour. i walked to the end of the hallway to jade s room. she was still unpacking and in deep conversation about which things her mom would have to take back to new york with her. i returned to my room and flopped down on the belled. i had no television on the bed. i had no television or radio. i listened to the conversations through the paper thin walls. did you see that little girl from california? she s here all by herself. it sounded like jade. she was talking to her mother. i know, she said, that s so sads although i couldn t see her, i was almost certain she was shaking her head. he felt sorry for me. i drowned out the rest of the conversation. i couldn t take it. i focused on the green flower on my bed spread and blinked hard to push back the tears. i didn t want anyone to pass by and notice me crying

veteran of the publishing world. i worked for harper is a senior editor and vice president for many years and went on to work at simon & schuster as well. so i have been around the block. i m a bit of a veteran in all fields, but we have learned so many things in this conference so far. it such a delight, such a pleasure to the wonderful keynote speech about the importance of words and the report from the frontlines of so many countries, south africa and russia, marvelous and to learn that the first encounter between europe and the new world, between the conquistadors and the quinta was over a book and on and on with the heritage of thomas jefferson and the wonderful discussions that you just heard. at such a vibrant discussion. and wonderful to know that it will go on on in the sum of as we go forward around the world. now what we have learned in the whole process is that the book culture is changing, although we all know i think in our hearts that the world of books which w

on autobiography. the book examines the differences in writing styles between men and women in autobiographical works. this encore presentation is just under an hour. c-span: jill ker conway, author of when memory speaks: reflections on autobiography, where did you get the idea for this? guest: well, i have been traveling around with my publicist from alfred knopf and giving readings from some of my earlier volumes and memoirs, and i started to explain to the audience before i read something about the genre, something about its history and where i thought my own work fitted in with it. and the audience would always get very interested and ask a lot of questions, and finally, my editor said one day, well, why don t you do a book about this? so i thought it was a wonderful idea and i i had to do a great deal of reading of 19th century memoirs that i hadn t read before in order to do the book, but i had great fun doing it. c-span: i have a copy of something you ll. guest
