A new generation of supplements have become a billion-dollar business, containing antioxidants that slow the development of macular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness. But according to a researcher, many on the market may not contain the level of antioxidants that they claim on the label.
Professors at the Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT), Ireland, have established an independent scientific certification for assessing product label claims in a bid to improve trust and transparency in the carotenoid or omega-3 markets.
The programme has been spearheaded by Dr Alfonso Prado-Cabrero and Professor John Nolan, who is also founder of WIT s Nutrition Research Centre Ireland - a multidisciplinary group studying the role of nutrition and lifestyle for human well-being.
The scientists and researchers at ‘Supplement Certified’ hold over 20 years of academic credibility in the area of assessing nutrition for human function, having built up a unique skillset at the Nutrition Research Centre.
