Many in the small group, which would swell in size over the next few hours to about 35 people, were holding flags and wearing Trump paraphernalia. It occurred as state lawmakers were convening for the start of the 2021 legislative session and as a mob formed in Washington, D.C. while Congress met to certify the results of November’s presidential elections. New York State Police say a fight broke out between those gathered to support President Trump and counter-protestors. Two Trump supporters were stabbed by a counter-protestor, a 37-year-old from Rensselaer. Alexander Contompasis was stopped by State Police after fleeing the scene in a vehicle. Two victims were taken to Albany Medical Center. A 36-year-old male has been treated and is expected to be released. A 40-year-old male is in stable condition after undergoing surgery. ....

Alexander Contompasis, 37, of Rensselaer, was arrested and charged with first- and second-degree assault and other charges, state police said. State police responded to the park shortly after noon Wednesday during the pro-Trump rally. The preliminary investigation determined that after a fight broke out between rally-goers and counter-protesters, two of the rally-goers were stabbed by a counter-protester, state police said. The suspect, Contompasis, then got into a vehicle and fled the scene. He was soon stopped by state police and taken into custody, state police said. ....
