It s a new year and a new president is about to take office. Right on cue, a new cohort of lobbying groups is setting up shop in Washington to influence the incoming administration s agenda for tackling climate change.
At least two energy trade organizations one focused on the power sector, the other on automobiles have launched in recent weeks to make sure their members benefit from the federal government’s amped-up effort to combat global warming under President-elect Joe Biden.

A trio of recent picks by President-elect Biden for his environmental team will put environmental justice issues at the center of his administration s agenda.
As Juliet Eilperin, Brady Dennis and I report, Biden made a series of firsts with his top-level hiring decisions this week. Those picks are set to seriously tackle the disproportionate impact certain communities face from despoiled air and land.
The former vice president is set to nominate North Carolina environmental regulator Michael S. Regan to become the first Black man to head the Environmental Protection Agency and Obama administration veteran Brenda Mallory to serve as the first Black chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality. ....

The Health 202: Or should we say Coronavirus 202? Here's our year-end review

The Health 202: Or should we say Coronavirus 202? Here s our year-end review
Paige Winfield Cunningham
It’s been a year, readers.
I expected to spend 2020 writing about topics like drug prices, insurance reforms, the opioid epidemic and health policy fights in the election.
Instead, I spent most of the year trying to understand and explain one particularly pernicious virus and the havoc it wreaked on the United States.
I wrote a lot about the coronavirus. Far more than any other topic, in fact:
We sent you 206 editions of Health 202 this year: 141 of them – nearly 69 percent – were focused in some way on the coronavirus. ....

The Energy 202: Biden s choice of ex-Michigan governor as energy secretary points to focus on electric cars

President-elect Joe Biden’s choice of Jennifer Granholm to be his energy secretary is a sign the president-elect’s team will try to spur automakers to sell cars that need little to no gasoline.
The relationship that Granholm, the former two-term governor of Michigan, has with Detroit automakers may prove crucial to the incoming administration’s effort to cut climate-warming emissions spewing from the millions of cars and trucks on American roads.
Biden intends to nominate Granholm to run the sprawling department also responsible for overseeing the nuclear weapons arsenal and managing radioactive waste, Will Englund, Juliet Eilperin and I report. ....

Fifteen percent of Americans in a new Kaiser Family Foundation poll say they definitely won’t take coronavirus vaccines.
But they may not be a sizable enough group to seriously undermine the nation’s battle with covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.
It all depends on who they are and where they live.
