ProPublica Local Reporting Network Partner Amy Silverman Named Arizona Journalist of the Year


ProPublica Local Reporting Network partner Amy Silverman is the recipient of the 2020 Virg Hill Journalist of the Year Award, Arizona’s most prestigious journalism award. The honor given by the Arizona Press Club is named for Hill, a popular and witty political columnist and reporter for the Phoenix Gazette who died of a heart attack in 1969 while covering the state House of Representatives. The award goes to the writer or editor who, in the opinion of the judges, had the best portfolio of work during 2020.
Silverman, reporting for the Arizona Daily Star, wrote about how often Arizonans with disabilities are denied services they desperately need by the state Division of Developmental Disabilities, or DDD. Arizona had long enjoyed a reputation for having the best services in the country for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Center for Journalism Ethics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison announced Monday that “Unheard” by the Anchorage Daily News and ProPublica, as well as “State of Denial” by the Arizona Daily Star and ProPublica, are two of five finalists for the Anthony Shadid Award for Journalism Ethics. The pandemic is getting worse, with another week of record-breaking COVID-19 metrics — or measurements that health experts use to gauge the severity of the pandemic.
Case counts in Pima County have never been higher and hospital capacity has never been lower across the state.
But the avalanche of coronavirus statistics, charts and graphics might make it more difficult for many people to know which metrics matter most.
“There is no magic metric,” said Kacey Ernst, an epidemiologist at the University of Arizona’s Zuckerman College of Public Health. “You need to have multiple metrics.”
