ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) Liberty ended Coastal Carolina’s perfect season with a blocked kick in overtime.
Elijah James blocked Massimo Biscardi’s 42-yard field goal attempt to give No. 23 Liberty a 37-34 victory over No. 9 Coastal Carolina in a wild finish Saturday night in the FBC Mortgage Cure Bowl.
Liberty (10-1) took the lead on Alex Barbir’s 44-yard field goal on the first extra possession.
Coastal Carolina (11-1) got a huge break in regulation when Liberty’s Joshua Mack fumbled inside the 1 with 41 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Safety Alex Spillum recovered the fumble to end the long drive. ....

Liberty stuns unbeaten Coastal in Cure Bowl

ORLANDO, Fla. (WMBF) - Coastal Carolina is unbeaten no more.
A blocked field goal kept the No. 9 Chanticleers just shy of perfection as they fell to No. 23 Liberty, 37-34, in overtime at the Cure Bowl Saturday. The defeat ends Coastal’s season at 11-1, just shy of being the first-ever Sun Belt Conference team to finish a season undefeated.
Coastal was able to force overtime when the game was tied at 34 late in the fourth quarter, when Flames’ running back Joshua Mack fumbled the ball a play after forcing himself down with less than a minute left in regulation. Alex Spillum picked up the ball and the Coastal offense ran down the clock to send the game to the extra period. ....

It will be a busy college football bowl week at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla., starting with 23rd-ranked Liberty University’s showdown with No. 9/11 Coastal Carolina in Saturday’s Cure Bowl, kicking off at 7:35 p.m. on ESPN. Contributions from multiple Power Five conference transfers in 2020 have assisted Liberty University’s football program in reaching an unprecedented level of success.
The college sports conferences that comprise the Power Five are: The Big Ten, the Big 12, the Pac-12, The Southeastern Conference (SEC), and The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
This year the Flames have been led by Auburn (SEC) quarterback transfer and Maxwell Award watch list candidate Malik Willis. The talented dual-threat quarterback spent two seasons with the Tigers as the backup for Jarrett Stidham now a quarterback for the New England Patriots then departed after losing the starting quarterback competition to Bo Nix in 2019 spring practice. Willis sat out last season at Liberty due to NCAA transfer rules but was named the starter shortly before the start of the Flames’ 2020 season. In 10 gam ....
