Thinking It Through: Bulldogs Get A Much-Needed Sweep

Duluth, MN, USA / NewsTalk 610 AM & 103.9 FM Jan 25, 2021 9:43 AM UMD head coach Scott Sandelin knew Western Michigan wouldn’t make it easy on his team Sunday at Amsoil Arena. The Bulldogs weathered an early storm from the Broncos, were buoyed by a strong penalty kill, and got to work in the offensive zone. Opportunistic on scoring chances early, UMD was able to ride out a 4-1 victory for a two-game sweep that could be a real shot in the arm for the Bulldogs. “Good game for us, hard-fought,” Sandelin said. “They were a better team than (Saturday). They came out, which we knew they would. Zach (Stejskal) made some huge saves. I thought the last 15 minutes, we were playing very well.”

Thinking It Through: New 'Third' Line Leads UMD to Win

Scott Sandelin has been looking for a little bit of an offensive spark. At least for one night, he found it. Strong from the start of the game, the new third line of Jackson Cates, Kobe Roth, and Koby Bender struck four times in total, including a Cates natural hat trick in the third period, as UMD pulled away from Western Michigan, 5-1 Saturday night at Amsoil Arena. Cates’ goals came 7:58 apart in the third period, turning a 2-1 lead into the final four-goal margin. It’s the first hat trick for UMD in nearly two years, with Nick Swaney getting the last one on Jan. 25, 2019, in a 7-2 win over Omaha. It’s the first natural hat trick for a UMD player since JT Brown accomplished the feat in Anchorage on Feb. 3, 2012, on his way to an All-American season. The last UMD natural hat trick at home was by Mike Connolly, during his legendary five-goal performance on Feb. 5, 2011, against Minnesota.

Thinking It Through: Pause Ends, Bulldogs Are Back

Duluth, MN, USA / 95 KQDS Jan 22, 2021 9:23 PM It’s one thing to talk about how a COVID issue and potential pause were practically inevitable. Just look around. Half the NCHC Colorado College, Omaha, Denver, and now UMD has endured some sort of COVID-related shutdown that caused games to be moved (so far, none have been officially lost). So the bottom line was that this was probably going to happen. It happened to the UMD women’s hockey team. And both basketball teams. (I should note that, while every one of UMD’s active winter sports teams has endured a pause due to COVID positives, the actual number of positive tests in each case has been quite small. The pauses have come as a result of necessary contact tracing around the positive tests. As much as we probably have grown to despise the phrase “out of an abundance of caution,” it’s appropriate here, as none of these shutdowns have come as the result of outbreaks of COVID within teams. Instead, they’ve happened
