4 days ago in Local Photo: Saga Communications CHICAGO (AP) An iconic Chicago road could be getting a new name in honor of a Black man who is recognized as a key settler of the city. The city council on Wednesday is expected to consider renaming Lake Shore Drive for Jean Baptiste Point DuSable. DuSable, a native of Haiti, is considered to be Chicago’s first permanent, non-indigenous settler. He had a trading post in the late 1700s. Alderman David Moore says Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s administration is opposed to the name change and has proposed alternatives, such as naming the Dan Ryan Expressway for DuSable. ....
State Rep. Mike Halpin, D-Rock Island, has taken on an additional role after being elected Thursday night as Rock Island County Democratic Party Chairman. […] Halpin may have set his sights higher though; he is considering running for Congress to represent the 17th District after U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-Moline, announced April 30 she would not seek re-election. “I’m looking at it, but right now I am focused on finishing up the (legislative) session,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do in the last two weeks, so it’s not something I’m putting a lot of energy into right now. The Chicago Tribune reports that Alex Giannoulias won the endorsement of the 22-county Southern Illinois Democratic Chairs’ Association yesterday for the March 2022 primary. In addition, Giannoulias said he also received 4 other Downstate counties’ endorsements. Giannoulias is among 5 Democrats who are seeking to replace Jesse White. White is the state’s longest serving secretary of state, and has been in the post since 1999. White said late last year that he will not seek re-election. Giannoulias is up against 3 ....

Despite overcast skies, Moore s crowd of supporters was a rainbow of diversity, spanning a range of ethnicities. “This campus is where I learned to love Illinois. I met so many people from different parts of the state, different ethnicities, different religions and different political parties.
