Cave deposits reveal Pleistocene permafrost thaw, absent predicted levels of CO2 release

Chestnut Hill, Mass. (4/28/2021) The vast frozen terrain of Arctic permafrost thawed several times in North America within the past 1 million years when the world s climate was not much warmer than today, researchers from the United States and Canada report in today s edition of
Science Advances.
Arctic permafrost contains twice as much carbon as the atmosphere. But the researchers found that the thawings which expel stores of carbon dioxide sequestered deep in frozen vegetation were not accompanied by increased levels of CO2 in the atmosphere. The surprising finding runs counter to predictions that as the planet warms, the volume of these natural carbon stores can add significantly to CO2 produ ....

Artist Alberto Rey hosts virtual talk with students


Global artist Alberto Rey hosted a virtual talk on Tuesday, March 30. Rey discussed his current work on an upcoming exhibition “Biological Regionalism: Oswego River and Lake Ontario,” which is coming to SUNY Oswego in Spring 2022. 
Rey was born in Havana, Cuba, and has worked on projects from upstate New York all the way to Nepal. Rey’s skills extend beyond being an artist, he is also a professor at SUNY Fredonia and values his work as a teacher. 
Rey also writes books about the ecological areas he examines and makes these books accessible through free PDFs on his website. Rey said he wants others to be able to access his books so that he can reach more people than just soley the ones who come to his exhibitions.  ....

SUNY Distinguished Professor Alberto Rey of the State University at Fredonia Department of Visual Arts and New Media, and En Foco Executive Director Bill Aguado will discuss the traveling Dos Mundos photography exhibition, its conceptual journey and the critical role En Foco plays in supporting communities of color by providing opportunities for artists and enhancing the visibility of marginalized groups, at a free Zoom meeting on Friday, Feb. 26, at 4 p.m.
Aguado will also talk about En Foco’s fellowship initiative. Now in its fifth year, the fellowship has been awarded to a total of 45 artists and produced the group exhibition, “Dos Mundos: (Re)Constructing Narratives,” currently showing in the Marion Art Gallery in Rockefeller Arts Center. ....
