I want to give a special thanks for the shoreline mapping that we are seeing coming out of the department. Your support for this mapping on the shoreline and near shore is appreciated. We recognize the value of the president s memorandum on mapping. I also want to thank you for the departments recent work on the disaster funds for the two fisheries disasters that we have seen. It is important to us, and as you know, there is more in that pipeline. When we first met some years back, i promised you that you were going to think of fishing when you visited with me, and im not going i to disappoint yu today [laughter] as i look through my seven priorities here for the department of commerce, six of those relate to fisheries or to our ocean. When Congress Last debated opening anwr to oil and Gas Development, people made arguments about the use of new technology and how it would minimize the impact on anwr. Since then a lot of the claims have borne out in the industry. We will share some of them today. A couple are directional. Extended reach Multi Lateral drilling techniques that allow wells to be drilled in all directions from a well pad kind of like spokes on a bicycle wheel. Directional drilling has been around since the 1970s. But at that time it was did not allow the reach that we can now. And so you could drill a few square miles around a pad. I have a figure thats been shown before in the hearing today. You can see a couple, three square miles using technology from the 1970s and fast forward to the run on the far right, 12acre pad where a rig can reach ....
Good morning everyone. Committee will come to order. We meet this morning to consider opening a very small portion of alaskas 1002 area to responsible Energy Development to meet the 1 billion budget reconciliation instruction that our Committee Received last week. The 1002 area covers 1. 57 million acres of land in northeast alaska within the nonwilderness portion. You bring it over here, sean. Within the nonwilderness portion of an war. And i think its important to put this in context in terms of the areas we are talking about. Anwar itself is 19 million acres. Approximately the size of south carolina. The nonwilderness area, is approximately the size of delaware. The area here is designated as federal wilderness. So when were talking about anwr itself, i think its importedant to recognize there are parts that are designated as wilderness, parts within the refuge and ....
