What other damage have you seen as the sun is starting to come up there. we re an hour behind you so we re waiting for the first light to pop up here. we ve been driving all throughout the night. we ve seen pockets of trees being down. this is the largest structure that we ve seen so far, the church steeple knocked off near the alabama line. after our last live shot we drove around to see what else was going on, and we ran into some state troopers who were blocking roads saying power lines were down. the big assessment will come in the next few hours. when you see a steeple like this one, one of the things you have to know is the path of the storm came through this area. we tracked it back through here, went in that direction and saw several trees down in neighborhoods back that direction and what looked like more power lines. we were also told a firehouse may have been damaged in the area. the first light is going to be so important with the storm happening late in the season, on th ....
The florida/alabama line monday evening. top of that, tropical storm grace is spinning in the baumts bahamas and is expected to hit haiti where they just had an earthquake. the dixie fire has been raging for over a month burning over 540,000 acres across multiple counties. as of this afternoon, the second largest fire in state history is only 31% contained. officials say they re still weeks away from full containment. fire crews are also worried about this weekend s triple digit temperatures plus storms that could bring lightning and gusty winds spreading the fire. approaching the top of the hour and this is msnbc reports. welcome back. ....
Up towards of 20 inches. all of this see this mississippi? in the orange. even along the mississippi, alabama line, all the way down to the gulf here and all along louisiana, stretching over to the florida panhandle. for areas near louisiana s lake ponchartrain, more than two feet of rain. flooding from hurricane katrina devastated much of this area 14 years ago when levee s breached. one woman in new orleans that lived through that as well as another nightmare storm, betsy, in 1965, says she will never get used to the feeling of know ago potentially deadly storm is on the door step. for people like stays in new orleans or in louisiana, it s fearful for us. we don t like it but it s something that this is where we chose to live, so this is what we have to live with. it s an eerie feeling. you don t ever get comfortable ....
Relative to the location. right around that eye some of the greatest damage. there s still going to be structural damage. but with time you start seeing the damage with some of those rain bands as well. some of those rain bands can produce hurricane force winds as well. reporter: where is the center of the storm, the eye wall, the most damaging part of the storm? where at this point do you think it s headed? john, when we look at that, this isn t just a coastal situation, you re going to have prolonged power outages associated with that eye wall. you have an expansive area of winds. this is about 175 miles around the center and 40 miles away from the center. when you have a landfall system this strong, it s going to take a while to bring those winds down. even on the alabama line, getting into georgia, you re still going to have hurricane force winds. even inland you re going to have heavy rain and seeing trees down and power outages well inland into georgia. so we ve been gettin ....
Land. completely. yet look at the eye wall and how well formed it is. ken graham is with us from the hurricane center. how long does this eye wall maintain itself, ken? that s one of the problems with this storm. when you make landfall at 155 miles an hour, it s going to take awhile to get those winds to come down. we expect it to still be a hurricane later tonight as this reaches the georgia/alabama line. even central portions of georgia, we ll still see a hurricane this evening before it weakens. shepard: this thing is headed north/northeast. mariana, that s ahead. what about big cities say, like, albany, georgia, how much of a danger are they in? you know, we talk about that rainfall. some areas could see 3 to 5, even 6 inches of rain. you take that rain and start saturating the soil. you made a great point. the rain band was so large, you re already starting to ....
