Despite fierce competition from machine-made imports, the ancient business of traditional weaving, pottery and metal work is still thriving in the inner towns of the Sultanate.
In Nizwa in the Dakhiliya region, Ahmed Al Nabhani, was mesmerising tourists as his fingers moved delicately to form curves of a rim of a large pot, called Jahlah in Arabic. Tourists also watched him kick his potter’s wheel while his hands created a shape from the damp clay. Behind him, his assistant was firing a round-shaped kiln after placing a stack of pots inside the three-metre-deep oven. ....

MUSCAT: The Board of Trustees of the National Museum today held its seventh meeting under the chairmanship of Salim Mohammed Al Mahrouqi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism, Chairman of the National Museum’s Board of Trustees.
The original manuscript of “Kitāb al-fawāid fī ilm al-bahr wa-al-qawāid” or (The Book of the Benefits of the Principles and Foundations of Seamanship), by the Omani navigator Ahmad bin Majid Al Sa’adi was inaugurated in the Maritime History gallery under the patronage of Salim Mohammed Al Mahrouqi, Minister of Culture and Tourism. The manuscript is loaned from the Al Assad National Library in the Syrian Arab Republic. ....

“VAT shall be levied on all transactions in a supply chain, even if the revenue of products or services is not in fact sought after or realised,” said Ola Al Nabhani, a legal consultant at BK Law, a judicial firm in Oman.
Muscat: Value added tax is due on excess stocks of goods that have been bought by companies to be sold to customers, even if they remain in storage once that company has ceased operations, a legal expert in the country has said.
VAT is expected to come into Oman on April 18, 2021, and companies that are liable to pay this tax are required to register before then. ....

Doha: With less than two weeks left in the Qatar Total Open 2021, the numbers of confirmed stars for the WTA Tour Premier event continue to grow as Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur - the first Arab woman to reach the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament - entered the main draw of the elite tournament.
The tournament will be held from March 1 to 6 at the Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex in Doha.
Aside from the 26-year-old World No. 30 Jabeur, the highest-ranked Arab player in WTA history, two-time champion and World No. 13 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, 2016 finalist Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia, Egypt’s Mayar Sherif are joining the event as wildcard entrants. ....
