NILES Just more than two weeks since a councilman at-Large resigned, the Niles City Democratic Precinct Committee appointed newcomer Jimmy Julian to the position by an 8-3 vote Tuesday.
Julian will be sworn in at today’s council meeting at 6 p.m.
“I’m happy with the appointment, and I can’t wait to get to work,” Julian said. “I have big shoes to fill. Ryan McNaughton brought a lot of professionalism and intelligence to the council. We ran against each other in 2019, but since then, I’ve gotten to know him and have an incredible amount of respect for the man.”

Ryan McNaughton has served his city well, and we congratulate him on his new role, as well as the Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber on a good hiring decision.
McNaughton resigned last week from his council seat to take over as the new vice president for government affairs for the chamber.
McNaughton, Niles councilman at large, was in his third term. During his elected service, he has been forward thinking and conscientious.
While serving Niles constituents, he focused on important issues such as prioritizing a plan to develop and improve the city’s infrastructure. He also played an important role in the financially struggling city’s fiscal turnaround.

NILES Niles City Council decided in a 7-0 vote Monday to dismiss a case that questioned 4th Ward Councilman Al Cantola’s residency.
The decision during a hearing comes after an inquiry over several months into Cantola’s Vienna Avenue residency.
“That was the right decision for council to dismiss this issue. I’ve stated on the record that’s where I live. That’s all it’s ever been,” Cantola said.
“This has been a fishing expedition for months now for the city, and I’m sure a couple thousand-dollar bill for the city and the taxpayers that should have never been put on the table,” he continued. “Our city has much bigger things going on than to worry about a councilman’s residence, whose home burnt and who put his wife in a safe place. This has been a shame.”
