Maldives has signed a project document with the United Nations in the Maldives, enabling the island nation to recover better from the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
The project document titled “Protecting Women and Children: Digitalizing and Streamlining Social Services and Creating a Unified Platform for National Care” was signed by Maldives Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid and the United Nations Resident Coordinator Catherine Haswell during a ceremony held at the Foreign Ministry on Thursday.
The project aims to link progress towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in the Maldives road to recovery from Covid-19. ....

Automatic Weather Stations handed over to Maldives Meteorological Services, ensuring better water security for communities

7 December 2020, Malé, Maldives - The Maldives Ministry of Environment, supported by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has handed over six Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) to the national Meteorological Service. By adding to the existing network of AWS, the project will improve the accuracy of rainfall and weather predictions, enabling communities to harvest and manage rainwater more efficiently, ultimately driving towards better water security for communities throughout the atoll nation.
The main objectives of expanding the network of AWS are to enhance continuous weather monitoring and projections, and to improve accuracy in coverage by reducing the data gap resulting from the distance between the existing AWS units. ....

EU, UNDP Call on Youth Leaders to join ‘United Creatives’ for Digital Peacebuilding in Sri Lanka and the Maldives

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the European Union are calling on youth leaders, influencers, and creators to promote peace through digital action by joining a new regional programme in Sri Lanka and the Maldives. ‘United Creatives’ is implemented by the social change agency Love Frankie and will support youth from across the two countries to build digital campaigns that offer alternatives to hate speech, both online and on-the-ground.
The selected youth aged 18-30 will gain access to cutting edge training, mentorship, and tools to build creative online campaigns over ten weeks through UN specialists, Facebook masterclasses, social leaders, and a range of thematic and creative experts. ....

Maldives has jumped nine ranks in the Human Development Index by the United Nations Development Programme.
The Human Development Report 2020 publicized by UNDP shows that Maldives ranks 95 out of the 189 countries. Last year, the island nation was ranked in the 104th spot.
The report notes that life expectancy of Maldivians at birth has increased by 17.4 years and the country’s Gross National Income (GNI) has also increased by 132 percent, per capita.
Further, the report also indicates that Maldives has the highest in “Material Footprints” in the South Asian region, at 14.5 tonnes, higher than the average of 12.3 tonnes. ....
