Bengal fishermen go missing in Arabian Sea


Four fishermen, who had travelled from Kakdwip in South 24-Parganas to Beypore in Kerala for better income, remain untraced since May 5 after their trawler went missing in the Arabian Sea and their family members now hope the Bengal government will help them get information about their kin.
A family member of one of the missing fishermen said among the four were three brothers who had travelled 2,340km to work in Kerala for a better living.

He added the last time the four had spoken to their family members was on May 5, the day they ventured into the Arabian Sea for fishing on board trawler Ajmer Shah. ....

Plea to ensure safety of deep-sea fishers, vessels


Association demands provision of latest communication and safety equipment to fishing community
All India Deep Sea Fishers’ Association has appealed to the government to ensure the safety of deep-sea fishers in the light of the recent series of accidents and loss of lives and fishing boats.
In a memorandum submitted to Fisheries Minister Saji Cherian, the association listed a few recent accidents, including the one in which fishing vessel
Andavan Thunai, which ventured out from Kochi on April 29, was caught in the cyclonic storm Tauktae and sank off the Lakshadweep islands on May 14. Fishers on two boats had witnessed the accident. However, there were misleading reports in a section of the media that the fishers in the vessel had returned safe though there is no news of them as of now. ....

Thiruvananthapuram, May 16 : A fishing boat, with 15 aboard, which had sailed from Beypore in Kerala s Kozhikode from May 5 and was declared missing as there was no contact with it for the past couple of days, has been located off the Mangaluru coast, it was announced on Sunday.
P.A. Mohammed Riyas, the MLA-elect from Beypore, told media persons that he got information from the Kerala coastal police that the boat, Ajmer Shah is anchored off the Mangaluru coast and all the 15 fishermen on the boat are safe. ....
