U of M Virtual Kyiyo Pow Wow Continues this Week The Annual Kyiyo Pow Wow Celebration is one of the oldest traditions of the Kyiyo Native American Student Association at the U of M. Last year was the start of the pandemic, so naturally the Pow Wow was canceled. This year, the innovative students that have put this celebration on for more than 50 years have moved the event online rather than canceling entirely. If you re not familiar, the purpose of the Kyiyo organization, according to the students involved, is to bridge the faculty and students of the University of Montana with the communities of Missoula and surrounding area. ....

UM s student-organized Kyiyo Pow Wow will present the 53rd annual week of dancing, singing, story sharing and events from April 12 until April 18. âWe regret to have to transition an important and powerful week for our cultures, our families and our University to an online version this year,â said UM student and Kyiyo President Aislyn Baker. âBut out of deep respect for elders and our community, we decided to employ an extra precaution of safety this year.â ....

The deeds of a long-dead Italian explorer have been celebrated in the U.S. for over 80 years. But in Montana, Senate Bill 146 aims to remove Columbus Day from the docket of state holidays and replace it with Indigenous Peoplesâ Day. Seven other states â Alaska, Hawaii, Maine, New Mexico, South Dakota, Vermont and Oregon â have already replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoplesâ Day, while Alabama and Oklahoma celebrate both holidays.  Montana Sen. Shane Morigeau wrote and sponsored the bill. This is not the first time he has brought this issue up in the legislature. Morigeau brought forth a similar bill in 2019, but it was killed in the Senateâs State Administration Committee. As of Monday, Feb. 15, SB 146 was in that very same committee. ....
