Opinion | What the AAPI community needs this month

Every year, the United States recognizes May as Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month an opportunity to celebrate the cultures, narratives and histories of the AAPI community. However, this year’s AAPI Heritage Month requires greater action to address the anti-Asian hate that has continued to persist year after year.
Since last May, the AAPI community has seen a significant rise in the number of hate crimes and anti-Asian sentiment. However, the rise of AAPI hate cannot be reduced to the acts of violence that make it to mainstream headlines. Hostility toward Asians presents itself in even the most basic interactions that occur on a daily basis. This month provides an opportunity not only to prevent further violence towards Asians, but also to consider our individual role in eliminating these hateful attitudes. ....

Opinion | Asian-American hate crimes aren't new

Since the domestic arrival of COVID-19, Asian-American hate crimes have reached an all-time high. Fears of the virus, conflated with widespread misinformation, have placed Asian Americans at the center of an unprecedented national crisis. However, it is imperative to recognize that COVID-19 was not the only source of the recent rise in hate crimes. Rather, the xenophobic characterization of COVID-19 was merely another iteration of anti-Asian sentiment that has persisted in the United States for centuries.
From the moment Asians first set foot in America, they have consistently been alienated and ostracized. In 1869, the successful completion of the Transcontinental Railroad depended solely on exploiting 20,000 Chinese immigrants for their intensive labor in often fatal working conditions. After enduring brutalizing labor and hundreds of fatalities, the Chinese were excluded from attending the inauguration ceremony a fitting culmination to the years of abusive treatment. ....

Opinion | What makes Gen Z so powerful

Born between the years of 1997-2012, Generation Z has seen it all. Our childhoods have been defined by unique experiences such as a global pandemic, 9/11, numerous school shootings, and the most viable threat to our democracy in history, a Trump Presidency. Despite the challenges, Gen Z has prevailed as the most educated, diverse, and funniest generation yet.
Many of these traits can be attributed to the increasingly influential role technology has played in our lives. Unfortunately, our dependence on technology has led Gen Z to feel lonelier than any other generation. This is the result of our false impression that being connected on social media qualifies as human connection. When alone, even for short periods of time, members of Gen Z tend to glue their face to a screen to replicate the presence of another person. Our attention still belongs to our devices when we are with each other. I wouldn’t be surprised if one day we replace our peers with an iFriend X Pro with Retin ....
