AHMEDABAD: “April is the cruellest month”: thus opens ‘The Waste Land’ of T S Eliot in 1922. The line finds grim resonance with Gujarat of 2021 in April, the state recorded 2.6 lakh cases and 2,600 deaths, accounting for 46% cases and 37% mortalities recorded during the entire pandemic so far.
To put the figure in perspective, from March 2020 to April 2021, Gujarat has recorded 5.67 lakh cases and 7,183 deaths. From January 1to March 31, Gujarat had recorded 62,644 cases and 213 deaths, which is 24% and 8% of what April alone recorded. In fact, the entire year of 2020 had recorded 2.45 lakh cases from March to December and had recorded 4,306 deaths.

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat in 24 hours ending 5 pm on Wednesday added 14,120 new cases, taking the state tally to 5.38 lakh. The silver lining in the dark Covid cloud was that the daily coronavirus cases dipped for the first time in 27 days even though by a marginal 1.6%.
With 8,595 discharges in 24 hours, the state recorded a daily recovery rate of 61%. This was 41% on April 23, five days ago. In absolute terms, the daily discharges increased from 5,618, recording a 53% rise in recovery.
In another major relief to patients stuck in 8-48 hours of waiting for 108 ambulances, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) announced on Wednesday that it has withdrawn the earlier admission requirement in Covid hospitals through 108 emergency services only.

Poonam Solanki outside the Covid hospital at Civil Hospital campus
AHMEDABAD: Poonam Solanki, in her late sixties, was recently spotted outside the 1,200-bed Covid hospital at Civil Hospital campus. A phone in hand, she was on a video call with her son Mahendra, 30.
“How are you son? Do they give you good food? I m praying for your fast recovery from corona,” the mother lovingly told the son on the other side of the call. She hung up after asking him to get well and come home soon. The call lasted for over five minutes.
Poonam could be mistaken for one of the hundreds of relatives talking to their patients fighting Covid-19 infection inside the hospital wards the only difference was that Poonam s son had succumbed to the virus six months ago.
