Share INSPECTOR of the Nigeria Plant Quarantine Department have received intensive training on the modalities of their operations, particularly on the best practices for plant quarantine operation. The training was collaboratively organised by the University of Missouri Assistance Program (UMAP), the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the NPPO/IPPC of the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS), including the support of the United States Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA-FAS). Themed: “Use of the Harmonized Phytosanitary Inspection and Decision-Making Guide”, the 3-day training held last week at the NAQS training center in Ibadan, Oyo State. Similar training workshops were earlier held in Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, and the Republic of Benin, for their individual countries’ plant quarantine inspectors. ....

Share In the course of last week, both Chambers of the National Assembly took up the issue of failing security across the land. Whilst the Senate asked that the service chiefs be sacked, the House of Representatives interacted with the security agencies. It is now clear to all and sundry, at least from the comments and contributions of lawmakers across party lines, that Nigeria is approaching a failed state. The pogrom going on in Southern Kaduna presently is totally unacceptable. In a programme that I monitored on television recently, a presidential aide was challenged to take a drive around his constituency without security patrol if indeed he feels Nigeria is safe enough. ....
Share NIGERIA is a major maize consuming nation as all sections of the country utilise it as a major source of food for human consumption, animal feed, and industrial raw materials. Currently, Nigeria is the 14th largest producer of maize in the world, with a total production volume of 12.1 million tons in 2019, representing about 3 per cent of global production. The government has over the years been involved in various initiatives targeted at scaling up production including importing maize to meet the national deficit. Through the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR) of the Ahmadu Bello University, Nigerian researchers have developed and released over 50 varieties of maize adopted to all the Nigerian agro-ecologies. ....

Amnesty International says 12 people were killed when soldiers opened fire on a protest about police brutality in the wealthy Lagos suburb of Lekki. Multiple eyewitnesses have told the BBC they saw soldiers shoot people. Some 1,000 protesters had gathered at the Lekki toll gate on 20 October to prevent cars using a major motorway. Soldiers were reportedly seen barricading the protest site moments before the shooting started. ....
