20 Soldiers, 180 Taliban Killed in Fresh Spate of Violence: MoD At least 20 security force members and 180 Talban fighters have been killed in a fresh spate of violence in Afghanistan over the past three days, the Ministry of Defense reported. In the latest incident, at least nine security force members were killed in a Taliban attack in the Baghlan-e-Markazi district in Baghlan province in northern Afghanistan. 16 soldiers were reportedly taken hostage by the Taliban. Violence and heavy battles were also reported in Helmand, Zabul, Ghazni and Balkh provinces in the past 24 hours. “There is no coordination between the local officials when it comes to launching offensive operations,” said Baghlan resident Mohammad Zarif. ....
Palace’s Recent Courting of Dostum Raises Questions The appearance of Marshal Abdul Rashid Dostum, the former vice president, at a special security meeting at the Presidential Palace on Saturday, caused politicians and analysts to speculate that President Ashraf Ghani is using Dostum opportunistically amid new developments in the peace process. Budget Progress: Agreement on Raise for Teachers, Civil Servants The finance and budget commission of the Wolesi Jirga (House of Representatives) and the Ministry of Finance on Wednesday made some progress toward passing the budget for the next fiscal year. The head of Parliament’s finance and budget commission said that the government has approved a slight increase in the salaries of the teachers and the civil servants based on the recommendation of Parliament. Based on the recommendation, 2,000 Afs will be added to the salaries of employees between grades 1 through 8. “The budget is stuck in the finance and budget commission for amendments, or for a deal,” said Naseer Farahi, an MP. ....
