Former Republican Charlie Crist Is 1st Democrat To Announce Run Against Floridaâs DeSantis
Crist will likely face Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried and possibly Rep. Val Demings for Florida s Democratic gubernatorial nomination.
Florida Congressman Charlie Crist, once the stateâs Republican governor, on Tuesday became the first Democrat to announce his candidacy to take on GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis next year â a must-win race for DeSantis if he wants to run for president in 2024.
âEvery step of the way, this governor has been more focused on his personal political fortune than the struggles of regular Floridians,â Crist said at his announcement rally in his hometown, St. Petersburg. âThe truth is, Gov. DeSantis has failed us.â
“Ron DeSantis’s failure to protect Floridians during this pandemic will go down as one of the greatest catastrophes in Florida history,” Ms. Mucarsel-Powell said in a statement.
“Ron Be Gone is going to go all over Florida, meeting voters and educating them about how Ron DeSantis has failed on every issue from our economy to our health care, from our schools to small business, he’s never looked out for us,” Mr. Simmons noted, also in a statement.
