Copyright Introduction It is often assumed that early alphabetic writing was developed by members of a Semitic-speaking, Western Asiatic population (‘Canaanites’) who were involved in Egyptian mining operations around Serabit el-Khadim in the Sinai Peninsula (Sass Reference Sass1988; Goldwasser Reference Goldwasser2006; Naʾaman Reference Naʾaman2020). Later, this early alphabet would spread to the Southern Levant, where it was transformed into the Phoenician alphabet, from which the Greek alphabet subsequently derived (Albright Reference Albright1969; Naveh Reference Naveh1987; Sass Reference Sass1988; Goldwasser Reference Goldwasser2006; Hamilton Reference Hamilton20 ....
