EAC in joint regional approach to revive Covid-hit tourism

The East African Community (EAC), has devised a joint regional approach aimed at reviving the tourism sector in the region amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.
Tourism has been the worst-hit sector since March 2020 when the EAC countries took measures to contain the spread of Covid-19. The measures that were taken included the closure of airports and land and water entry points, both international and within the region.
About six months later, the airports were reopened under strict operating procedures which also involved the training of airport staff by the EAC and the regional aviation body, the Civil Aviation Safety and Security Oversight Agency (CASSOA). ....

Summary
Tour operators admit that the 2021 virtual expo did not have financial implications. The previous exhibitions required participants to pay for travel, meals, booth space, furnishings, internet, electricity and accommodation. The only cost an exhibitor incurred this time round was to buy data.

Yvonne Sandra Kunda, a tour consultant, appeared to be in a jovial mood at the closing ceremony of this year’s Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo (POATE) held at Sheraton Hotel Kampala. She said it was a moment of relief after taking part in the first virtual tourism expo as the sector navigates towards the new normal. ....

It brings together, all of Uganda’s tourism stakeholders for the greater purpose of individually showcasing their potential to the world on one hand, and jointly, to raise the profile of Uganda as a competitive and attractive destination for domestic, regional and international tourists.
POATE is an especially important aspect of UTB’s marketing calendar, that presents an annual prized opportunity for tourism business operators in Uganda to not only meet new clients but also strengthen existing relationships with their global tourism and travel trade partners. ....
