Afghanistan news live updates August 27: At least 90 Afghans and 13 US troops were killed and hundreds were injured as two suicide bombers and gunmen attacked crowds of Afghans flocking to the Kabul airport in the waning days of airlift for those fleeing the Taliban takeover. According to reports, the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the killings on its Amaq news channel. While the Taliban "condemned the blast", US President Joe Biden vowed to hunt down those responsible for the twin explosions and said he had asked the Pentagon to develop plans to strike back at them. Meanwhile, there are still at least 20 Indian nationals stranded in the country now under Taliban control, sources said on Thursday. As the situation in Afghanistan turned worse, former Afghan Vice-President Amrullah Saleh claimed that "IS-K cells have their roots in Talibs and Haqqani network particularly the ones operating in Kabul". Afghanistan news live updates August 26: At least 13 people have been killed after two explosions occurred outside Kabul airport on Thursday evening. Meanwhile, earlier in the day, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar briefed leaders of various political parties on the prevailing situation in Afghanistan on Thursday. During the key meet, Jaishankar said India is trying to evacuate as many people as possible. The meeting comes at a time when the United States has warned crowds trying to access Kabul airport to leave the area, as Britain and Australia cited the "high threat" of a terrorist attack. The Pentagon also said Taliban have strengthened their control around the Kabul airport which is the only access point for the international community to reach out to people in Afghanistan. As desperate Afghans and foreign nationals scramble to flee the nation, Taliban fighters have set up checkpoints on the road leading to the Kabul airport to prevent them from reaching the tarmac. US President Joe Biden said US troops carried out one of the most difficult airlifts and managed to evacuate 13,000 people. NATO, too, vowed to speed up and help other countries in evacuating people.
