In early January 2018, Russian operators manning the extensive air defence network at Russia’s Khmeimim airbase in western Syria spotted 13 incoming drones at low level. As the Russian air defence operators engaged these drones with EW & SHORAD systems, it was clear to the Russians that they were witnessing a new genre of a collaborative drone attack.
The Russians shot down seven drones and jammed the remaining six in the nick of time. While the Islamic State and Afghan Taliban have used drones to deliver ad hoc explosive payloads, the failed attack on Khmeimim that evening was disturbing to close observers of drone warfare as the first recorded instance of a mass-drone attack by non-state actors in a combat operation. More drone attacks happened on the Russian facilities in Syria all through 2018, 2019 and 2020, with over 150 drones disabled by Russian AD in Syria til ....

Project Mosquito will be the technology demonstrator of an armed UAV that could fly as a Loyal Wingman alongside the Typhoon and F-35 before the end of the decade.
The United Kingdom signed a £30 million three-year contract to design and manufacture a prototype of the first “Loyal Wingman” Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for the Royal Air Force. The company that was awarded the contract is Spirit AeroSystems, based in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and is set to take the lead of “Team Mosquito”, as the technology demonstrator project team has been called. ....

£30-million injection for UK's first uncrewed fighter aircraft - sUAS News

26 January 2021
The UK’s first fleet of uncrewed fighter aircraft is one step closer to reality following a £30-million contract to design and manufacture a prototype in a three-year deal supporting more than 100 jobs in Belfast.
The uncrewed combat aircraft will be designed to fly at high-speed alongside fighter jets, armed with missiles, surveillance and electronic warfare technology to provide a battle-winning advantage over hostile forces. Known as a ‘loyal wingman’, these aircraft will be the UK’s first uncrewed platforms able to target and shoot down enemy aircraft and survive against surface to air missiles.
In a boost for Northern Ireland’s defence industry, Spirit AeroSystems, Belfast, have been selected to lead Team MOSQUITO in the next phase of the Project. Utilising ground-breaking engineering techniques, the team will further develop the RAF’s Lightweight Affordable Novel Combat Aircraft (LANCA) concept, with a full-scale v ....
