Its my pleasure to welcome today a professor Gregory Irwin of the revolution through world war ii. Its one of the great advantages of being in philadelphia that we can be close neighbors to professor irwin, whose work on the british army ands the American Revolution is extensive and nuanced and always inspiring of our exhibits and publications. In the development of our core exhibition, professor irwin played a crucial role in the display of the story of enslaved runaways weighing the promise of the proclamation announced by general clinton in 17 which offered somewhat vaguely protection and freedom of run aways who made their way to the british lines through consultation with a number of historians particularly of American History in this period. It became a really imperative that we do two very challenging, often seemingly contradictory things with showing and people facing this question of whether to trust the british on this promise. Im going to introduce the panel and then we are each going to say a few words about our quite different roles. Nathan and i have the same role, he is trying to steal the 20th century from me, doing a pretty good job of it, but we all have relatively different roles in backstory. I wanted to talk about that a little bit and then we are going to open it up to your questions. Just for starters, this is not what it looks like behind the scenes at backstory. Game as over 100 million players worldwide. The new York Military Affairs Symposium hosted this 90minute event. [ applause ] Nicholas Moran enlisted in the reserve Defense Forces in 1997. He joined the United States army in 2000 and was commissioned as an army officer in 2002. He then spent one year in iraq as a tank platoon leader and later a oneyear tour in afghanistan. Nicholas moran is also a graduate of the u. S. Army and general staff college. Nick has been working as the San Francisco bays wargaming americas inhouse tanker and historian since 2012 and has the nickname of the chieftain. Might want to remember that. His first book on the development of Tank Destroyers is scheduled for release in the first half of 2018. Nick is known for written articles and reviews of tanks inside and out. Specifically the John J Pershing centennial lecture series. Currently serves as the chair of military history at the United States army command and general Staff College. He has notably published the school of hard knocks combat leadership in the American Expeditionary forces, which was the recipient of a society for military histories 2013 distinguished book award. He has also recently published pershings crusaders, both of which you can pickup in our museum store. Been doing ongoing researching, contextualizing both 1917 and our world today, providing a critical lens on the United States and its relationship to war. He brings the energy that he uses at the general Staff College and also at the United States military academy at west point to our stage every time that he speaks here.
