Petitioners to SC: 'Electoral bonds are anonymous white channels of black money'

A five-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court on Tuesday began hearing a batch of petitions challenging the electoral bonds scheme. The petitioners argued that the bonds are opaque and against the fundamental principles of the Indian Constitution. CPI(M), one of the petitioners in the case, also argued that the scheme does not block the black channel of money flow but creates an alternate anonymous white channel.

Senior advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for one of the petitioners, Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), argued that the case goes to the root of India’s democracy and therefore, it should be decided before the elections. Bhushan contended that electoral bonds defeat the people's right to be informed and promote corruption in the country.

Advocate Bhushan also argued that the effect of the amendment has now led to subsidiaries of foreign companies that have never carried out legitimate business in India to secretly funnel hundreds of crores ....

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta on Monday, while objecting to a statement made by Advocate Prashant Bhushan before Supreme Court, asked Bhushan to not abuse every individual and every institution .
The statements were made before a three-judge Bench led by CJI during arguments in the Hindustan Zinc disinvestment case. SG Mehta also asked Bhushan to not make allegations against people not present in the Court.
Don t abuse every individual and every institution. Mr Rohatgi who appeared in this matter for Vedanta has not given any opinion in this matter. SG Mehta said.
SG Mehta s remark had come after Bhushan made a submission in the Court as to why a regular case was not registered in the matter by CBI even after recommendations for the same was made by all senior officials. ....
