Full cladding removal is not necessary in all buildings, one of the country’s leading fire engineers says after a fire-spread test he conducted showed a Melbourne high-rise could stay safely inhabitable with about $40,000 worth of work instead of a $4 million replacement of all combustible panels.

The City of Port Phillip’s Municipal Building Surveyor (MBS) today issued an Emergency Order and Building Notice requiring residents in a St Kilda apartment building with combustible cladding concerns and other fire safety matters to leave the premises within two weeks.
The building cannot be lived in after the next fortnight until fire safety concerns have been addressed. The Emergency Order follows a recommendation by the independent Advisory Reference Panel to Council’s MBS.
The building was identified by the VBA as part of an audit of a number of buildings across the State, where inspections are undertaken to identify any compliance and fire safety risks. ....
