The final phase of widening and improving U.S. Highway 82 through the city has begun.
The highway is one of Prattville s main thoroughfares. The work will four lane a section of about 2⅓ miles from Highway 14 to U.S. Highway 31.  The average daily traffic count  in the project area was 10,990 in 2013 compared to 18,893 in 2019, Alabama Department of Transportation figures show figures.
Along with local traffic, Highway 82 is known as University Highway because it is a favored route to Tuscaloosa. Traffic increases during the fall football season as fans travel back and forth for Alabama football games. ....

Trees fell beside the graffiti-covered walls and broken windows as heavy machinery crunched through two decades of overgrowth. Within minutes, the courtyard of downtown Montgomery’s Grove Court Apartments, once a nationally celebrated architectural achievement, was visible again.
Developers caution that the work to renovate and reawaken the historic complex could take two years or more. But in its first few days the project had altered the course of a lawsuit against the city and turned Grove Court into a source of optimism about the area’s future. ....
