Hidden Budapest: The statue almost lost to history

Hidden behind the monumental columns of a vaulted cupola once stood the statue of an empress who earned the genuine admiration Hungarians thanks to her devotion to the nation. The woman was Empress Elisabeth of Austria or, as her beloved subjects liked to call her, Sissi. The monument surrounding her statue is long gone but the sculpture is still with us to this day – even though the path that led here has been littered with obstacles.
