Merrill to Consider Water Rate Hike, Fluoride in City Water

MERRILL, WI (WSAU) â The City of Merrill is looking at a slight increase in its water rates in 2021.
City Administrator David Johnson says the state Public Service Commission recently examined the departmentâs finances and recommended a steep 36% hike in rates, but residents will likely see just a fraction of that.
âWhat we have discussed is a 3% increase or a 6% increase,â said Johnson. The increase would be to allow the system to keep up with operating expenses.
The cityâs last water rate increase came three years ago. Johnson adds while the full 36% increase would make the PSC happy, he doesnât think it wise to put all that on residents at one time. ....

Merrill May Consider Vote on Fluoride in Water

Voters in Merrill may have a say in whether fluoride will be removed from the city s water supply.
City Administrator David Johnson says some residents feel it s not fair that city residents get the dental benefits from it, while those who rely on well water don t.
“The argument from some is because people outside the city don’t have it and with the toothpaste and other fluoride products now there really isn’t a need for it within the city.”
Johnson says it s up to the city council if the issue will go for a vote.
“This is something that still has to be discussed and a determination made as to whether or not the council wants to move forward with a referendum” ....
