Re: Glennon commentary, March 10 | News, Sports, Jobs - Adirondack Daily Enterprise

To the editor:
I worked for Bob for 10 years at the Adirondack Park Agency. Learned that zoning is no way to make a park. The good news in your March 10 issue was the Adirondack Land Trust bought a 60-acre inholding in the state’s Vanderwacker tract.
The Adirondack Club has seemingly gone bust. The state still owns less than half the park. While the Woodward Lake project seems bad, many projects fail or are bought for preservation.
Sales and land taxes are the worst while income taxes are the best way to pay for government. Foisting federal Medicaid on the counties is awful! The state should buy more land in the park, and the feds should pay for Medicaid! ....

Death warrant for an Adirondack lake | News, Sports, Jobs - Adirondack Daily Enterprise

Guest Commentary
The Adirondack Park Agency will issue a death warrant to a pristine Adirondack lake Friday, and a mystery lurks as to why.
Woodward Lake, in Fulton County, is about 100 acres, undeveloped and shallow. The entire tract is about 1,200 acres. The developer (who, according to Protect the Adirondacks, has four outside-the-Park projects totaling 533 lots on 9,800 acres) will be allowed to ring its shoreline with 18 lots, whack up an untouched forest with 16 more, and build 2,000 feet of new road through it.
I was employed by the agency a quarter-century ago, from the mid-’70s to the mid-’90s, as first associate counsel, next counsel and finally as both executive director and counsel. (Budget wouldn’t allow me to fill the counsel position.) ....

TUPPER LAKE The Tupper Lake town board is drafting a letter to the Franklin County Board of Legislators, letting the county know the town is interested in discussing the Big Tupper Ski Area property if the county forecloses on it this spring.
In this letter the town board will express interest in having the chance to purchase the property it used to own and run as a recreation area in 1960s, ’70s and ’80s. It is not an actual request to purchase the land. The county may foreclose on the property in the coming months, taking it from the owners for unpaid taxes, but has not started the process to do so yet. ....
