Bipartisan group discussing Senate rules change

“I haven’t yet decided whether there’s merit to getting involved,” he said.
“I spent a lot of time on this particularly when Sen. Schumer and I were the chairman and the ranking member on Rules and he was never willing to do any of these things that would eliminate the first 60-vote hurdle or anything like that,” Blunt added.
The effort to see if there’s a deal to be had on smaller changes to the Senate rules comes as Democrats don’t currently have the votes to nix the legislative filibuster. Democrats hold 50 seats, but Manchin and Sinema are both publicly opposed to ending the legislative filibuster. Several others are leery of taking such a step. ....

GOP senators call for commission to investigate Capitol attack

The GOP senators are calling for a panel to look into the “massive security failures” that occurred Jan. 6.
“Congress should not be allowed to investigate itself when it comes to the massive security failures of January 6,” the senators wrote in a statement. “We are calling for an independent commission to be appointed to investigate the security failures that allowed the Capitol to be breached on January 6th resulting in five deaths.”

The senators said that the commission should be of “nationally recognized, non-partisan security experts,” and established in the “spirit of other bipartisan commissions.”
They added that without the independent commission, the investigation would “fall into the familiar territory of partisan squabbles ultimately resolving nothing.” ....

Graham urging Biden to get Pelosi to 'call off' impeachment proceedings

Biden has avoided publicly weighing in on the impeachment effort, signaling that he would leave that up to congressional leaders as he focuses on legislative priorities and getting his Cabinet confirmed.
He disclosed to reporters this week that he has reached out to the Senate parliamentarian to discuss if the chamber can divide its time between legislation or nominations and an impeachment trial, something the Senate didn t do during Trump s 2020 trial.
