Alberta’s government is opening more medical detox beds and offering nasal naloxone kits in Edmonton as part of its ongoing work to save lives and increase access to recovery supports.

With $2.1 million from the government over three years, Edmonton’s George Spady Society now has 35 medical detox beds.
Another $1.5 million from the provincial government is supporting a pilot project to provide Albertans in the Edmonton area with publicly funded nasal naloxone kits. The project is being led by the George Spady Society, in collaboration with Alberta Health Services, Edmonton Police Services and other community partners. ....

Alberta preparing to announce child mental health and wellness panel

Alberta is planning to announce a child mental health and wellness panel at noon Thursday.
Premier Jason Kenney made the announcement during a Facebook live Q and A Wednesday evening, saying the panel will be co-chaired by Calgary-South East MLA Matt Jones. The panel will look at how various COVID-19 public health measures have affected children throughout the pandemic.

“This is actually (Jones’) brainchild, his idea, because of his concern, which we all share, about the mental health implications for children coping with all of this stress,” said Kenney. “Schools being open and then closed and economic pressure that their parents are living under, being detached from their friends and their broader families. We know that it’s had a real impact on children.” ....
