The Curie Society shines a light on women in STEM in an exciting kid-focused story. Imagining a world where Marie Curie established a secret society for women in science, the graphic novel centers on the newest recruits. Simone, Maya, and Taj are students at Edmonds University, but after solving a series of complex puzzles they’re inducted into the titular group. It’s an action-packed sci-fi adventure that puts women at the forefront. To celebrate the release, we dug into the process behind the story with its developers, Adam Staffaroni and Heather Einhorn. ....

FTD Fluid Markers for Degeneration: Check. For Pathology: Not Yet.

16 Mar 2021
As the frontotemporal lobar degeneration field approaches an era of prevention and clinical trials, it needs robust biomarkers that herald the onset of symptoms and track the progression of a person’s underlying disease. Those tools are essential to developing effective treatments. Alas, the complexity of this group of rare diseases confounds the search, and international cohort studies such as Europe’s GENFI and North America’s ALLFTD are grappling with the challenge (see Part 1 of this series). Besides sitting for cognitive tests and questionnaires at every visit, participants with FTD and their asymptomatic family members are undergoing repeated lumbar punctures, blood draws, and brain scans for these longitudinal studies. Nearly a decade in, their efforts are starting to pay off in the form of antecedent markers that change preclinically and some that might hold promise for trials. Alas, with regard to disease-specific molecular markers, ....
