The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warned Americans Wednesday not to fill plastic bags with gasoline as a fuel shortage strikes the East Coast.
The Colonial Pipeline, which transports about 45% of the fuel consumed on the East Coast, has been shut down since Friday following a ransomware attack.
Gas stations have fuel outages in 11 states and the District of Columbia, according to GasBuddy, which uses crowd-sourced data to track fuel demand and prices. In North Carolina, 65% of stations have outages and in Virginia, 44%, according to GasBuddy data published Wednesday afternoon.
Images have surfaced on social media recently of drivers using nontraditional containers to store gasoline. ....

No evidence of a gasoline shortage in region


The pipeline provides 45% of the East Coast’s fuel.
The American Petroleum Institute, an advocacy agency based in Washington, D.C., organized a media conference Wednesday to allay consumers fears and inform the public that there is no shortage of gasoline.

“Our industry is closely monitoring the situation,” Frank Macchiarola, API senior vice president of policy, economics and regulatory affairs, said. “We are seeing a spike in demand for petroleum due to hoarding of petroleum. We encourage consumers not to hoard petroleum. Everyone has a role to play in this situation.”
Macchiarola said the pipeline is expected to be running again this weekend. ....

FAIRMONT — Gasoline is still flowing in West Virginia, despite the disruptions in southern states.
A cyberattack on Friday hit the Colonial Pipeline, which delivers about 45% of the fuel consumed on the East Coast. The attack caused a ripple of disruptions in southern states, leading to panic-buying and stations being bought out of their supplies.
“What you’re feeling is not a lack of supply or a supply issue. What we have is a transportation issue,” said Jeanette McGee, spokeswoman for the AAA auto club in an interview with the Associated Press. “There is ample supply to fuel the United States for the summer, but what we’re having an issue with is getting it to those gas stations because the pipeline is down.” ....

Government and industry officials reiterated Wednesday that there is no gasoline shortage but that “panic buying” of gasoline has resulted in shortages at some gas stations on the East Coast, and officials are asking motorists to only buy as much gasoline as they need.
This comes after a cyberattack last week on the Colonial Pipeline, the nation’s largest fuel pipeline caused it to shut down its operations on Friday. Hackers linked to Russia locked up computer systems and demanded a ransom to release them. ....
